The Room

The dimensions asked for below follow from this answer. It is asked as a shape rather than as an area because the butt joints are counted on each wall and added, and an area produces a perimeter rather than four walls.

In feet, floor to ceiling. It sets the wall area and, with the sheet size, the number of rows of board up each wall.

Five answers rather than two. Length times width is the area of a flat ceiling and of no other kind, so a vaulted or sloped ceiling returns no area here rather than an approximation of one.

The Board

The length is a finishing decision rather than a coverage choice, because longer sheets mean fewer butt joints. This page reports the joint count for the size you choose and for the other published lengths beside it, and it does not choose a size for you.

The orientation decides which sheet dimension runs along which wall dimension, so it is a mode rather than a label. Not decided is an answer: it returns the sheet count and no joint count.

Optional, and it does not gate the sheet count. It sets the sheet weight and the board type the purchase summary is reported under. Published guidance gives half inch on walls.

The Openings

None is an answer and is offered as one, so that an empty list is an answer rather than missing data.

The Waste Factor

Published guidance gives these three bands. The factor is applied before the division and the sheet count is rounded up once, at the end, because rounding to whole sheets first and correcting afterwards costs a sheet.

Finishing and Prices

Optional. Published guidance states that compound coverage adjusts with the finish level, but gives no coverage figure by level, so this page reports the level and does not adjust the compound quantity for it.

Overview

A drywall sheet is not a unit of area. Its two long edges are tapered so that tape sits below the wall plane and finishes flat, and its two short ends are butt edges, flat and standing proud of the wall where they meet. So the sheet length decides how many of the hard joints you have to hide: a twelve foot wall in four by eight sheets has one butt joint per row and in four by twelve has none, on the same square footage and the same waste factor. Published guidance puts it plainly, that sheet length changes the tape and compound rather than only the sheet count.

Two other decisions sit between an area and an order. Whether to deduct doors and windows splits the published sources, and on an ordinary room it is one sheet either way. And rounding to whole sheets before applying the waste factor rather than after costs another, which one published worked example does in print.

What to Look at First

Read the butt joint count beside the sheet count. The sheet count is the part every drywall calculator gets right, and the joint count is the part that decides how much work the wall takes after the board is up. Then read which openings method produced the sheet count, because the two published methods differ by a whole sheet on an ordinary room.

Every quantity here comes from one area, one sheet size and one waste factor, with the joints counted separately on each wall.

The courses and the sheets per course are rounded up before the joint arithmetic, because a fractional course would otherwise produce a fractional butt joint, which does not exist. The subtraction of one is there because a wall spanned by a single sheet has no butt joint at all.

Hung horizontally the sheet width runs up the wall height and the sheet length runs along the wall length. Hung vertically they swap, which is why the orientation is a mode rather than a label. Joints are counted per wall and summed, never from a total length or a perimeter: a corner is an inside corner, taped with the tape folded into the angle, and it is a different job.

The waste factor is applied before the division and the result is rounded up once, at the end.

Units

Lengths are entered in feet or metres and areas are reported in square feet with square metres alongside, at 0.09290304 square metres to the square foot. Weights are in pounds with kilograms alongside, at 0.453592 kg to the pound, and joint compound is in US gallons with litres alongside, at 3.785412 litres to the gallon. Sheet sizes are nominal Imperial dimensions and are shown in feet with the metric equivalent beside them, because metric markets sell a different board list rather than a conversion of this one.

Limitations

  • This page counts sheets and butt joints. It is not a sheet layout: it does not place courses, stagger the joints, use offcuts or mix sheet lengths, all of which a hanger does.
  • Framing, stud spacing and structural work are outside it, and so are labour and cost beyond arithmetic on a price you enter.
  • A vaulted or sloped ceiling is not modelled. Length times width is the area of a flat ceiling and of no other kind.
  • Where a rated assembly is required this page names the board the requirement calls for and designs no assembly. A fire resistance rating belongs to a tested construction rather than to a sheet.
  • The compound, tape and screw figures come from calculator sites rather than from manufacturer coverage data, are scaled from a single published reference room, and are the weakest numbers on the page. The two published tape rates differ by a factor of two and both are reported.
  • Finish levels are reported and not applied, because no coverage figure by level was available to apply.
  • Corner bead, trim and texture are outside this version, as are metric board sizes as their own product list.
